A Defining Moment In High School Athletics I was a part of something my senior year that not many High School students will ever experience. It is one of those things that I will tell my grand kids about in years to come. The 2002 Fort Defiance Wrestling Team had a winning season with a perfect record. Our accomplishments as a team and as individuals will be in the records books at Fort Defiance High School, Virginia. Students athletes who play sports in school have dreams for their and themselves. One of these dreams is being exceptional enough to make it to the trophy case. We made it! The hard work, long practices, and discipline within the sport and us paid off. Our coach would always tells us that if we wanted to be the best. Then we would have to train like the best, and that what we did everyday. We never lost a duel match that year; it was the first time in the sport of wrestling at Fort Defiance High School. We were 25-0. Nobody believed that we could do it even the students and teachers didn’t think it was going to happen. I will have to admit that if you had told me that we would be undefeated at the end of the season I would not have believed it myself. At first we won a couple matches in a row, but we didn’t think anything about it. Then one day before practice our coach came into the locker room and talked to us as a team. He told us that we had won against some really good teams and that he felt that we could go undefeated. We all sat there for a second, and then it hit us we could win them all. From that point we were a different team. We were on a mission. Our toughest match was against Turner Ashby in Harrisonburg Virginia. They had not lost a duel match in our district, the Valley District in two years. They had been a powerhouse in wrestling for the past five years. We trained to beat them, we knew that once we beat them that the only thing that could stop us was ourselves.
